The Satanic Panic and the Legend of the Smurfs

David & Bianca Season 1 Episode 44

Send us a text

What do camera malfunctions, Smurfs, and satanic imagery have in common? They all played a part in the eerie experience of recording our latest episode on the "Satanic Panic." We started with strange technical glitches that set a bizarre tone, leading us into a discussion about the origins of the Satanic Panic from the 1980s to today. We explored how pop culture during the 80's became a breeding ground for fear and suspicion, linking it to notorious figures like Charles Manson and the chilling case of the Acid King. The atmosphere was thick with unease as we debated the plausibility of drug-induced murders and reflected on our own discomfort with satanic themes.

In a particularly nostalgic and spine-chilling segment, we revisited David's own unsettling experiences with the Smurfs. Growing up as Jehovah's Witnesses, these blue characters held a special place in David's childhood fears. We shared how the community believed in the evil spells of Gargamel and recounted terrifying tales of possessed Smurfs toys and animated wallpaper. As we navigated these memories, the sense of nervousness was palpable. Amidst the creepy recollections, we encouraged listeners to share their own satanic panic stories while clearly steering away from any "blue" tales. This episode is a blend of frustration, fear, and fascination, capturing our genuine reactions to the bizarre events and sinister themes.

Speaker 1:

Hey, I don't know, but we thought we had recorded this past episode a little past, more than halfway through.

Speaker 2:

I was ready to wrap it up.

Speaker 1:

David noticed that you were recording.

Speaker 2:

I'm glad you're laughing about this cause like so in the middle of the episode. So this is the episode. I'm glad you're laughing about this Cause Like so in the middle of the episode. So this is the episode.

Speaker 1:

So we Actually the video was gonna be pretty good, because A lot of weird shit started happening and it would've been great If it was recorded, but it wasn't.

Speaker 2:

So we're doing an episode, oh, that's true Second time.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, called the Satanic Panic. That was the whole. So we're doing an episode. Oh, that's true Second time, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Called the Satanic Panic.

Speaker 1:

That was the whole purpose.

Speaker 2:

Right, that's this episode.

Speaker 1:

That's this episode right now that we're releasing.

Speaker 2:

And we were almost done recording this episode, yeah, and in the middle of recording this episode, yeah, when we got through several parts, we're trying to incorporate video into our podcast. So, and that's in the middle of our well, at the beginning of our stories, right? We?

Speaker 1:

mentioned a cartoon.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, mentioning the cartoon, the camera started doing a bunch of weird stuff beeping turning on and turning off yeah it was very strained so we kind of just pushed through yeah, we got over the cartoon part and we were trying to move on, yeah, and it stopped doing it, I guess, and we don't have no idea what's going on. Yeah, I don't want to fuck with it, but I guess we're supposed to talk about the cartoon again, so we're so I'm gonna tell you right now if it turns back on that's just proof yeah, when we start talking about what we're gonna talk about, if this camera turns back on, I might just sell the house.

Speaker 2:

So we're talking about the satanic panic, yeah, and I'm gonna push through this because I'm not only a little frustrated, I'm a little scared. If I'm honest, weird things are happening.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

So we're talking about the satanic panic and I started talking about when.

Speaker 1:

I was Serial killers. Let's go to the serial killer part.

Speaker 2:

You want to start with serial killers.

Speaker 1:

I mean it didn't turn on the camera and turned it off it didn't.

Speaker 2:

It's not what started the camera.

Speaker 2:

No it didn't Okay, Okay so we're going to go to the worst part first. Fine, so the satanic panic I've talked about it. It started in the 80s with people getting uncomfortable Christians getting uncomfortable with kind of satanic imagery getting into pop culture. We talked about ACDC and Ozzy Osbourne and a few things like this and people just thought we were getting a little too comfortable with this kind of hell and satanic imagery and at the same time this is on the heels of Charles Manson being a serial killer using that kind of imagery as well, and so the whole United States is a little bit on edge, right yeah, and so we talked about that.

Speaker 2:

We talked about a few serial killers that were using this kind of imagery. I mentioned the acid king, who this guy was doing a lot of drugs, his favorite drug was acid and he would go around killing people in a satanic ritual way, a guy on acid running in the streets.

Speaker 1:

I don't think that's possible. So, but we'll leave it for another episode.

Speaker 2:

That's going to be an episode and I'm going to have to research it more, because you bring up some valid points.

Speaker 1:

I don't, I don't fucking. I've never done acid, but from what I've heard, allegedly yeah allegedly you. I haven't done shit, I haven't have you been around people on acid.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and that's where you're getting your. Yeah, it's. So why don't you describe what you've experienced other people?

Speaker 1:

Like, what do you see when somebody's on a Laying on the fucking floor, kissing the fucking floor? I don't know fucking.

Speaker 2:

Really.

Speaker 1:

Rolling like a cat, I don't know. It's not like I could see someone like on acid just getting up and running out the street and murdering people. Killing people, yeah, and then doing like imagery as well. Yeah, it's a lot to handle.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I get that. I can't think of too many incidences where I've been around somebody on acid. Um, I can definitely imagine it off of a few drugs, but not like math, math, I could see it, math is a pretty bad joke, let me, math is terrible don't do it guys don't do math it won't take you that far in life yeah, so math I could see

Speaker 2:

it going through it today. Yeah, I'm having a hard time today, so we're we're recording this on the same day that we did the the past episode last episode we're doing, not the one we didn't record though yeah, had to bring that up it's I mean this one's for the books.

Speaker 2:

Let me tell you that yeah, this is a very special episode to show all of our dysfunction. So, in addition, back on track, in addition to the serial killers, which I think is a legitimate concern, right, like if people are killing people and using the devil as a excuse and people are worried about it. I get that. Yeah, like that one makes sense, right. Like I don't want charles manson loose, yeah and on acid yeah, that's a different guy, but but point taken.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I mean, that was like his main excuse. Yeah, the the devil. He was using acid. The devil was just an additional part.

Speaker 2:

For who?

Speaker 1:

For the acid king.

Speaker 2:

So I'm going to have to look all that up. I just know that when I looked up satanic panic, that one of the ones that came up was the acid king, and so I kind of went over it real quick, but I don't know all the details.

Speaker 2:

I'm going to learn. Okay, right, and that's going to be a future episode, and so some of the other things that are less shocking, I guess, and a little comical to me is like the monster energy drink people are scared of, yeah Right, and so in the last episode that we didn't record.

Speaker 1:

You mentioned.

Speaker 2:

We talked about the M being like an ancient writings of 666.

Speaker 1:

Right, it's just a straight up 6.

Speaker 2:

Anyways, I'm going to do the research and I'm going to send it to you. Right, I'm not going to read it, anyways, it's going to be a TikTok. I'm going to send it to you. I'm not going to read it, anyways, it's going to be a TikTok. I know how to talk to you. Fuck, and so on. The zero On the O Stay away from math guys On the O. This night is going completely off the rails. It's the Mayan drinks.

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

The Mayan drinks, what the?

Speaker 1:

Mayan drinks is. You drank one too. You didn't drink I didn't drink. What? How are you going to blame another Mayan's drink if you didn't drink it?

Speaker 2:

That's probably why that's a satanic panic. Yeah. You already started with dumb shit On the O of monster is an upside down cross. Oh true On, the O of monster is an upside down cross.

Speaker 1:

Oh true.

Speaker 2:

And then it says release the beast, which people say is a reference to the revelations, etc. Etc. I'm not too scared about that stuff. Have you ever had a monster drink? Yeah, I've never had one, but I wouldn't be scared to try it. I'd be more scared of the caffeine and sugar.

Speaker 1:

I like it.

Speaker 2:

See, I don't think it would be good.

Speaker 1:

That's why I didn't know.

Speaker 2:

But see, like that doesn't scare me I stick to red bulls. Red bull sponsor me hey, if I can get netflix yeah, yeah, shoot your shot bianca, shoot your shot, yeah yeah you want a red bull, give you wings.

Speaker 1:

I just said that for free I was gonna say does the devil have wings? Because it probably wouldn't get up with the devil if it has wings, doesn't it?

Speaker 2:

I think on some yeah, on some he has the red one, right. Yeah, I think he's got like hooves and that pointy tail and then he's got wings, I think I mean he's an angel.

Speaker 1:

He's a devil, basically yeah, I mean. He's an angel, he's a devil, basically yeah, I mean the devil was an angel too.

Speaker 2:

What are we talking about? I thought we were talking about the devil.

Speaker 1:

Right, but he was an angel.

Speaker 2:

Yes, the devil was an angel, that's what I'm saying.

Speaker 1:

And the Red Bull, it's a bull, but it has wings and hooves.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm not even sure, Anyway, anyway. So Now we're getting into the creepy part.

Speaker 1:

Oh, ah, shit Okay.

Speaker 2:

Of this episode. We're gonna do it. We're gonna talk about what we talked about In the last episode that derailed all of us.

Speaker 1:

And I I'm already gonna fucking look around Before something falls, just making sure I hope the lights don't go out.

Speaker 2:

I hope the camera doesn't turn on. That derailed all of us. I'm already going to fucking look around before something falls, just making sure, I hope the lights don't go out. I hope the camera doesn't turn on the TV doesn't go off. I just hope everything stays chill. All right, devils, Demons, Just stay chill. So what we were talking about? That started to for some reason make this room freak out. Right yeah, Is we were talking about the Smurfs.

Speaker 1:

You guys might laugh, but it was fucking scary when it happened.

Speaker 2:

There's part of me that's glad that we didn't record all that, because it was very weird.

Speaker 1:

But we would have had proof that it wasn't just.

Speaker 2:

There's going to be something on that camera.

Speaker 1:

We already talked about the monster. We already talked about the serial killer.

Speaker 2:

I think we're going to be good. I think the cameras. Maybe the battery was going out or something.

Speaker 1:

We hope so.

Speaker 2:

But I think that part's over. I think, I guess. And so what we were talking about with the Smurf?

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Is that I grew up a Jehovah's Witness, and people.

Speaker 1:

Maybe if you don't say the name too much, it won't do.

Speaker 2:

Jehovah's Witness or Smurf no the blue one.

Speaker 1:

Let's just say that.

Speaker 2:

How do you say it in Spanish? It's like ¿P. Pitufos or something Pitufos, Okay.

Speaker 1:

I think it's the same thing, David.

Speaker 2:

It might be the same thing. So this is what I was telling in the first non-recording of this episode. Right, is that growing up with Jehovah's Witness?

Speaker 1:

At the time you were like five.

Speaker 2:

Five years old.

Speaker 1:

Reference you were watching cartoons.

Speaker 2:

I was a little kid, five years old, in 1980 your mom always put you in front of the tv she did. That was my babysitter right. I grew up. I grew up what they call feral right like I'm a wild child yeah, and a lot of people Without that math Shit. Right Started with one plus one. As a kid, don't even get me started. I know my multiplication is up to 12. Sure Right.

Speaker 1:

Yep. So as a little kid being a Jehovah's.

Speaker 2:

Witness, we were not allowed to listen or to watch the smurfs, right? And what I explained, okay, what I explained. I'm really scared right now.

Speaker 1:

I don't know why you keep saying the same word again and again. I'm just looking around before something fucking falls in there, like oh yeah, that fell and it wasn't. Like oh yeah, it wasn't the edge. Like that one's on the edge already. Word again I don't. I'm just looking around before something fucking falls and they're like oh yeah, that fell and it wasn't. Like, oh yeah, it wasn't the edge. Like that one's on the edge already.

Speaker 2:

The potato one, the middle one, you see, moving it back, I'm moving it back, we're gonna be fine it's not supposed to fall we're gonna be fine that one's on edge too.

Speaker 1:

The same potato, but in the other spot all right.

Speaker 2:

So we're gonna be fine, we're gonna be fine, we're safe. Right, we're fine, we're safe. Okay, right, right. So if something's wrong, this is the thing, right?

Speaker 1:

your nervousness is just like making me more freaked out it's fucking scary when you keep saying the blue word again and again, okay, okay, so we need anyways, you were five years old at the time. You were watching cartoons the blue ones, the blue guys and the church you were going to Right.

Speaker 2:

I was a Jehovah's Witness.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

They were very scared of these blue guys because the bad person in the show, gargamel, would use real spells. They said Allegedly, allegedly right, we don't know, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

You never tried them.

Speaker 2:

I don't know what real spells are Right, like how would I know if it's real Sure? Like are right, like how would I know if it's real sure?

Speaker 1:

right, like it comes with a seal or something on it, like I don't know.

Speaker 2:

Right, you didn't have a wand, I didn't have nothing right. And so they would say that if you have the tv on and he's saying these spells that these demons are just going to come flooding into your house, right? Right and so one of the stories that was passed around from church to church at the time was that this lady had a baby and she had a huge stuffed animal of one of the blue guys papa and when she went to go get her baby in the morning, the baby was not in its crib.

Speaker 2:

And when she looked at the doll, the big stuffed animal, the blue one. He just had the baby's foot sticking out of its mouth, right and as a little kid. That's terrifying and actually for some reason, right now I'm super terrified right david's sweating guys I am sweating and I'm not comfortable right, so there was other stories right for. Another story was that they had this nursery with those blue guys on the wall.

Speaker 1:

Right, I'm not gonna say smurfs anymore anyways but there are, there's I'm trying not to look around because there's a wallpaper. I'm even using the red pen for this I see you.

Speaker 2:

yeah, we're not going to be able to keep up with our schedule because you're coloring it all out. So so the wallpaper at night, these blue guys right, not gonna say smurfs would come off of the wall and they would dance on the ground around the girl's bed and they would do bad things, right, right, and so that was super terrifying to me at the time, and then I grew out of it, and now, for some reason, it's all back.

Speaker 1:

Yeah Right, apparently, you grew out of it. You didn't even know, I wasn't even scared until for some reason, I was telling David that they did come up with like new blue guys movies, to not say the freaking word I'm not gonna say smurfs, right anyways. And I was telling him that there's one in 20, what was it?

Speaker 2:

2014, 20 so I closed the page on my laptop.

Speaker 1:

That's how scary it was, but no, it was scary 2017, 2013 and 2011, something like 2017, 2013, and 2011.

Speaker 2:

Something like that, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So one of the movies, the storyline is like the Smurfs come to New York, I think, and there's a couple and the couple helps the Smurfs shit.

Speaker 2:

Careful.

Speaker 1:

Basically go back to their world, something like that on a full blue moon.

Speaker 2:

See, and that does sound a little satanic.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, say it like that and then well, I forgot to tell you that part. Well, and then eventually in the movie, at the very end, the couple has a baby and the smurfs are like, are like helping her out with the baby. I think I don't remember, but there's a baby involved in the movie, so that's kind of weird right yeah, because why would they need a baby?

Speaker 2:

exactly yeah, so in addition to the that particular cartoon, rainbow bright care bears he-man shira yeah, they do magical stuff with their chest right, and so it was just like anything that was magical. Yeah, was just satan written all over harry potter harry potter is considered. So people do say that right um dungeons and dragons, which was a game at the time right so all of these things were things that people were scared of.

Speaker 1:

I mean they never played it, but yeah but.

Speaker 2:

So my point was right. But that's math, it's true, they do the dice and all that shit. So my point was is right. But that's math, it's true, they do the dice and all that.

Speaker 1:

Shit.

Speaker 2:

So my point was is that some of it I get right? So the whole serial killers right, be careful of serial killers. That makes sense to me.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. Because they kill Right, there's proof of them killing.

Speaker 2:

And we catch them and we put them in prison.

Speaker 1:

If a serial killer says says you know what a smurf made me do it?

Speaker 2:

I believe them yeah, it's starting to sound more and more likely, so this is another part of it that I I hadn't planned on saying in the first time we tried this episode what but people were actually getting kind of like the Salem witch trials. But in the eighties.

Speaker 1:

What.

Speaker 2:

So there was people that were being accused of like possessing other people and doing like devilish stuff to people, and they were literally going to jail and going to prison and all this stuff. I need to do more research. These would be future episodes, but there was people arrested because they would wear something on their shirt that looked satanic and they thought that they were like so let's say like if there was an emo kid back in the day, like straight to jail so what would happen is something bad would happen in your house.

Speaker 2:

So you know how there's sIDS and there's like all these other things that we have like we understand.

Speaker 1:

Medically proven that it could happen and it's an accident Right or a kid could have an accident, right?

Speaker 2:

And then just so happened the day before some kid walked by with like an Ozzy Osbourne shirt on then, he must have killed the kid by putting a spell or whatever right, and so there's stories like that. That's not a story, but I just kind of made it up too, but but those types of things did happen as an example as an example, right, and so that's not one of the stories that's going to come out, because I just made that up, right. But if it did come up, just know that David did the stories.

Speaker 1:

That's going to come out because I just made that up, right? But if it did come up, just know that David did the research.

Speaker 2:

That's going to be weird.

Speaker 1:

Right, maybe that's a smurf in you, right.

Speaker 2:

I do turn blue, sometimes Right Right, and so that's another element of this. This is a new category week.

Speaker 1:

I mean it's also, like you would would call it, in the industry, the music industry. A lot of people nowadays are getting more comfortable with it.

Speaker 2:

It's coming back, I think.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, lady Gaga, she's very like outgoing in that part, right, but I think she just does it for the media, like so I do think there's, she's never gone down like over the years yeah it's been a pretty long career, though well, and it's not just her right.

Speaker 2:

So, oh yeah, it's hard to kind of remember what we talked about in the last episode and what we have like beyonce I'm scared to talk because we're going to say the same thing.

Speaker 1:

Taylor Swift.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, jay-z.

Speaker 1:

Jay-Z, I don't know. You said something about Lemonade.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so Lemonade's clearly a sign of the devil.

Speaker 1:

No, you said something else. I don't know so. Lemonade, something about Jay-Z.

Speaker 2:

Jay-Z cheated on Beyonce, from what I hear, on Lemonade, and that that's what Luminate's about. I don't listen to Beyonce like I should, but that's what I hear we'll have to do research and listen to that's going to be a future episode. So the whole Illuminati, you know, and we kind of hear this, I mean Taylor Swift is basically taking over the 49ers.

Speaker 1:

So yeah, I think it's the.

Speaker 2:

Chiefs. But I get your point. Oh, it's the Chiefs. I mean, taylor Swift is basically taking over the 49ers. So yeah, I think it's the Chiefs, but I get your point.

Speaker 1:

Oh, it's the Chiefs, yeah, and what do they care?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it doesn't really matter.

Speaker 1:

Go Cowboys.

Speaker 2:

Do you even watch?

Speaker 1:

Pay your cheerleaders more.

Speaker 2:

So that should be a conspiracy theory.

Speaker 1:

It's not a fucking conspiracy. They just pay them, like what? 500 bucks a fucking game. And how many games do they play before getting to the fucking Super Bowl? They don't get that many games 17 games I think, but how many have they gotten to the Super?

Speaker 2:

Bowl. No, the Cowboys haven't Exactly.

Speaker 1:

That's what I mean. That's what I mean.

Speaker 2:

So that's what I mean. So can you think of any other?

Speaker 1:

because, like I said, I'm getting a little confused of what we talked about in the unrecorded version of this episode uh, and because we started backwards since we don't want to, we didn't want to talk about the blue ones yeah, the smurfs hey guys, but it was fucking like, it was fucking scary. We started talking about those guys.

Speaker 2:

So what happened? Is we David?

Speaker 1:

has a GoPro.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Because he wants to start doing the video thingy, which I don't think the blue ones like it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so we recorded an episode earlier tonight. It was fine and it went great.

Speaker 1:

It didn't make any noise.

Speaker 2:

Didn't do anything.

Speaker 1:

The screen would turn on and off, but it was still recording, like it wasn't, and then we started this episode, but it didn't say like low battery or nothing like that, like no warning, which you would think it would say there's no way it's low battery, because I just charged it. That's another thing.

Speaker 2:

So we started recording this episode. Well, I, that's another thing. So we started recording this episode. Well, I should say we started not recording this episode right. And the camera and it's a gopro, so it's not like it can do a lot of things right, there's two buttons on it you think just started going crazy.

Speaker 1:

You know how the color red is usually related to the devil. What if it's blue?

Speaker 2:

Maybe. So I actually heard a long time ago that green was the color of the devil. So back to the music. You know we talked about Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath and ACDC.

Speaker 2:

There was a band that came out much later, I want to say late 90s maybe, and it was called typo negative and they kind of liked to play with like the vampire type stuff, yeah, and so they had a song called black number one right black number one, right, okay, and people were like all freaked out about this band and the cover of the album was two girls that looked like vampires okay like a close-up on their face, like they were about to kiss or something, like it was a little erotic. Right, their mouths are open and it was instead of black and white.

Speaker 2:

It was like green, black and white and so back then at least I was told the reason that they were doing that is that green was the color of the devil I mean it would make sense for the monster one, for the monster drink.

Speaker 1:

Oh it's also green, right, yeah, I mean it has different colors, but the main one is black and green yeah so I don't know yeah, so we'll see we'll make some research, so this is a new category. That's one of the things I think we forgot to say in this episode no, I think we did say it.

Speaker 2:

Is that the satanic panic is going to be a new category that we're going to follow. This was kind of like a brief introduction yeah. And we will go into the individual stories. I think maybe next week we should just do the whole thing on Smurfs.

Speaker 1:

Don't no.

Speaker 2:

We're going to have to record somewhere else.

Speaker 1:

Somewhere else from the disclosed location. Yeah, David, I don't think we're going to find somewhere else to talk about this, a new disclosed. Yeah, I know, since Smurfs already know we're here, I don't think we're safe anywhere.

Speaker 2:

We're not going anywhere. I don't know, so we recorded safe anywhere. We're not going anywhere, so we recorded that episode.

Speaker 1:

Allegedly.

Speaker 2:

And so I'm looking at the numbers right now. So we're good.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

This was a little hard to get through. I'm not going to lie.

Speaker 1:

Because I'm genuinely scared.

Speaker 2:

This is the first time I've kind of had fun with this series this is the time it wasn't fun this was not fun. This was the first time. It was a little bit of work and I'm not comfortable we usually hear like sounds outside and stuff like that.

Speaker 1:

This should happen inside the in the recording in our studio.

Speaker 2:

That's closed. We're the only two people here there's no fans, nothing that could cause. Nothing in this room is supposed to make noise.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2:

And a lot of stuff was happening, so that was very scary. I'm a little bit glad this episode's over, want to thank everybody for listening.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

Like and subscribe to all of our socials. Send us any stories you have.

Speaker 1:

Of the satanic panic.

Speaker 2:

Of satanic panic, but not of the blue ones.

Speaker 1:

I'll tell you right now we're not covering any blue stories.

Speaker 2:

You can send them to me, because it'll be a little reassuring to me that I'm not the only one who grew up scared of those guys I think it makes sense why you were scared of those guys.

Speaker 1:

I didn't. I wasn't fucking scared of them, but now I fucking have it's a little weird a little weird tonight.

Speaker 2:

Tonight it's hard to explain. Thank you for listening. See you next week see you guys.
